It's in this new design philosophy that I fear DOOM is not aiming for my generation of games, but rather something completely different from the core franchise. They saw something like the recent released Star Wars: Battlefront, and want a game that is similarly accessible. They seemingly confused "classic" with "simple". But my issue is that the developer doesn't WANT them to be fixed. Why is it that an RPG takes two direct hits to kill someone, yet a shotgun takes someone down mid-distance in one shot? I want skill-based movement, weapons that pack a punch, and make sense.
Hell, even the generic box art is indicative of some sad Halo wannabe. DOOM was not an insanely fast game, like Unreal Tournament, or Quake.īut what these developers don't understand is that DOOM is NOT Halo. Shooters of this caliber are relentless, nearly twitch based. You maintain the control, and with this ebb and flow, you control the dynamics of the match. Even the level design is uninspired, and not engineered with enough thought about potential PvP chokepoints, and "hot zones".Ī "classic" shooter means that the every player starts with the bare essentials, and the whole point of each map is to get to the best weapons as quickly, and as efficiently as possible. It shares the same name as a franchise that was pivotal to my childhood, and it honestly has no idea what it wants to be. No Borderlands, Destiny or The Division here, so everybody put the pitchforks away.There is absolutely nothing "classic" about this game. Please note, for purposes of this article we’re focusing on cooperative shooters of the non-looter shooter variety. With so many games utilizing this structure, let’s take a look at the best of the best and see which one reigns supreme. More recent entries into the genre have added things like campaign modes, loadouts, or RPG-like progression mechanics like weapon unlocks and character class leveling to keep players coming back for more. The basic formula is simple - take the level-based horde mode popularized in games like Gears of War and then add a light coat of story and some linear level traversal to tie it all together.
